Additional Scholarship Opportunities

The Boren Scholarship can provide up to $20,000 for an academic year overseas. 

In order to apply for a Boren Scholarship, you should:

1. Verify that you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate Flagship program. Other undergraduate students, including non-Flagship students enrolled in Flagship institutions, may not participate in overseas Flagship programs.
2. Watch our Flagship-specific webinar on applying for the Boren Scholarships (coming soon).
3. Talk to your on-campus Flagship advisor, as well as your Boren Awards campus representative. They can both work with you to ensure the strongest application possible. Your campus representative will also conduct an on-campus review of your application.
4. All overseas Flagship Capstone programs meet the Boren Awards eligibility requirements. However, responding effectively to the Boren Awards essays on national security and public service will be critical to your success.
5. Complete the proposed program section of the online application.
6. Choose “The Language Flagship” as your study abroad program sponsor.
7. Enter “The Language Flagship” as your preferred study abroad program name.
8. Choose the correct overseas institution (i.e. Nanjing University) from the institution list.
9. Indicate that you are currently in an undergraduate Language Flagship program.

Apply

Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000 for a combined total of $8,000. 

1. The Critical Need Language Award is competitive and offered to a limited number of Gilman scholars each year. Not all students who are studying these languages will receive $8,000. In addition to receiving additional funds for language study, students who are awarded the Critical Need Language Award and complete their Gilman Scholarship requirements will be offered the opportunity to take the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). This test and the results will serve as both an evaluation measure of the award and as a credential for the award recipient.

2. To be considered for this award, you will need to submit a short supplemental essay that describes how you intend to improve your critical need language skills, your motivations for doing so, and how your study of the language relates to your academic and professional goals.

The Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA) is a feature of the U.S. Student Fulbright Program, which provides an opportunity for some Fulbright U.S. Student grantees to receive typically from three to six months of intensive language study as an enhancement to their Fulbright grants. Language instruction providers and the duration of individual programs are subject to change and vary by eligible country. They must be approved by local Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies in the host countries. CLEA is offered to students once they have been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student grant which requires that they use one of the eligible languages for their Fulbright project and beyond. The purpose of the Critical Language Enhancement Award is to cultivate higher levels of language proficiency prior to and during the Fulbright grant period and beyond. Ultimately, Critical Language Enhancement grantees will achieve a high level of proficiency in a targeted language and will go on to careers or further study which will incorporate the use of the language studied and/or related languages. The Critical Language Enhancement Award helps promote the Fulbright Program's goals of cross-cultural exchange and dialogue. Fulbright grantees capable of communicating in the local language in their host countries are likely to form stronger bonds with their peers, conduct more meaningful research, and develop a greater understanding of a foreign culture. The experience grantees bring home after their Critical Language Enhancement Award and Fulbright grant will serve them in their chosen careers and throughout their lives.

During an academic year, the FLAS provide a $5,000 living stipend plus tuition and covers mandatory fees up to $10,000. 

This program provides academic year fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students in foreign language and area or international studies. The goals of the fellowship programs include:

Develop knowledge, resources, and training for modern foreign language and area/international studies

Attain foreign language acquisition and fluency•train international experts to meet nationwide needs

To be eligible for a FLAS Fellowship, applicants must: 

• Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
• Be a degree-seeking student in good standing at Arizona State University or have been accepted for admission to ASU.
• Be eligible to receive an Arizona State University tuition scholarship.
• Submit their FAFSA for the 2019–2020 academic year and provide a copy of their Financial Aid Award Letter.
• Be prepared to enroll in the intermediate level or above for both the fall and spring semesters. (For graduate students already proficient in one Asian language, some exceptions apply.)
• Be prepared to enroll in at least one area studies course (at least 50% Asia focus) for both the fall and spring semesters.
• Show high academic achievement and demonstrate a long-term interest in Asia.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.

The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

Each summer, CLS provides rigorous academic instruction in fifteen languages that are critical to America's national security and economic prosperity. CLS participants are citizen ambassadors, sharing American values and promoting American influence abroad.
