LSS Spaces

SILC Learning Support Services offers the use of many supported spaces;  primarily for faculty and students within the School of International Letters and Cultures, but available to those outside of SILC in many situations.  

  • A trained student worker is always available to support your use of the spaces.

  • SILC Instructors may reserve any of these spaces for class sessions by filling out the LSS Facilities Request Form

  • Students who are currently taking a SILC course are welcome to reserve many of the spaces.

  • SILC Students, as well as students and faculty members who are not currently affiliated with SILC, are welcome to use many of the spaces on an "walk-in" basis.

LSS Spaces - Calendars

These small classroom and group spaces will hold up to 6 people. They contain a large wall-mounted screen, one macOS computer with wireless keyboard and mouse, and the ability to cast four mobile device screens to the large screen at the same time. 

  • Reservations as a classroom: SILC instructors - please fill out the LSS Facilities Request Form.
  • Reservations for small group work (2 or more people): SILC instructors and students who are currently enrolled in a course that is taught by SILC - self-reservations can be made. Log in at https://links.asu.edu/lssreservations - then choose the "Reservations - LSS" link.
  • "Walk-in" use by SILC or non-SILC students - If one of these rooms is not currently being used and you are a group or 2 or more, you are free to use it. Check the calendar for any upcoming reservations that might interfere with your use, then have an LSS student worker unlock the door for you by pressing the Call Button that is located at the LSS front desk (in DH 132).

These rooms are primarily meant to be used for audio and video production, for teaching or attending online classes or other events, and for times when a private space is needed (e.g. testing).  

Each room:

  • Has been (or will be) sound-treated for sound quality within the room (outside noise may still enter the room)
  • Will hold up to 2 people
  • Contains one macOS workstation equipped with a webcam, a headset with a high quality microphone, and software for editing audio and video, creating screen recordings, etc. 

Reservations:

  • Reservations for use as part of a class session: SILC instructors - please fill out the LSS Facilities Request Form.
  • Reservations for one-time use: SILC instructors and students who are currently enrolled in a course that is taught by SILC:  self-reservations can be made. Log in at https://links.asu.edu/lssreservations - then choose the "Reservations - LSS" link.
  • "Walk-in" use by SILC or non-SILC students - If one of these rooms is not currently being used, you are free to use it. Check the calendar for any upcoming reservations that might interfere with your use, then feel free to just enter the room.  If / when there is a reservation, you will need to allow the reservation to use the room.

This video studio is primarily set up for sit-down, 1 or 2-person, video recording (e.g. podcasts). But, there are many possibilities. Please feel free to ask. We are glad to walk through how it might be used and glad to change things around for you when possible.

The room: 

  • Has a large green screen
  • (will be) sound-treated for sound quality within the room (outside noise may still enter the room)
  • Will hold approximately 4 people
  • Has two wireless microphones
  • You can use pictures, colors, video, or anything that is on your laptop screen, for the background in your video 

Reservations:

  • Reservations for use as part of a class session: SILC instructors - please fill out the LSS Facilities Request Form.
  • Reservations for one-time use: SILC instructors and students who are currently enrolled in a course that is taught by SILC: self-reservations can be made. Log in at https://links.asu.edu/lssreservations - then choose the "Reservations - LSS" link.
  • "Walk-in" use by SILC students (sorry, no non-SILC use) - If the room is not currently being used, you are free to use it. Check the calendar for any upcoming reservations that might interfere with your use, then go to the front desk and press the Call Button.  An LSS student worker will meet you at the front desk and will open the studio for you. 

The Collaboratory is intended to support student collaboration, project-based learning, videoconferencing and film. 

  • Its flexible design allows for up to 36 students to use the space at a given time, in many different furniture configurations.
  • But, Max occupancy is 54, so please do ask if you have needs beyond the 36 seats.
  • When the room is not in use, the six "pods" can be used by individuals or groups on a "walk-in" basis.
  • The presenter's tools consist of a computer running macOS and Windows, wireless laptop display capability (via Cynap), 2 large touch screen at the front of the room, and 6 smaller touchscreens around the room.
  • The room contains built-in Zoom capabilities ("Zoom Rooms" computer, ceiling speakers, ceiling microphone, 2 cameras)
  • It also houses a film presentation setup that consists of an HD projector, a large film screen (159"), and surround sound.

  • Reservations for use as a classroom : SILC instructors - please fill out the LSS Facilities Request Form.
  • "Walk-in" use by SILC and non-SILC students - If the room is not currently being used, you are free to use any portion of it. Check the calendar for any upcoming reservations that might interfere with your use, then feel free to sit down and use the computers and screens. 

 

The SILC LSS Computer Classroom:

  • Seats 30 students and contains MacMini computers capable of running both Windows and macOS, with dual screens at many stations.
  • The presenter's setup consists of computer running macOS and Windows  wireless laptop display capability (via Cynap and Solstice), 1 large touch screen at the front of the room, and 6 slightly smaller screens around the room.
  • The room contains built-in Zoom capabilities ("Zoom Rooms" computer, ceiling speakers, ceiling microphone,  2 cameras).

  • Reservations for use as a classroom : SILC instructors - please fill out the LSS Facilities Request Form.
  • "Walk-in" use by SILC and non-SILC students - If the room is not currently being used, you are free to use any portion of it. Check the calendar for any upcoming reservations that might interfere with your use, then feel free to sit down and use the computers and screens. 

     

This video studio, equipped with a high-definition camera and green screen is set up to allow faculty and students to quickly produce high-quality video materials that include elements such as still images, presentations, documents, or clips for face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. 

The studio is mainly set up for "One Button" use, i.e.:

  • insert a provided USB drive
  • start a (powerpoint or other) presentation if desired
  • hit the One Button to start recording
  • hit the One Button to stop recording
  • take the USB (that now contains your video) with you.

But, that basic functionality can be easily extended to include use of a personal laptop as a second video source, switching between video scenes, use of a lightboard, etc.
